Frequently Asked Questions

WINNERS Eyewear retailer of the year 2023 and 2026
why us?
What makes The Focal Rooms different from the high-street chain opticians in Southport?
At the focal rooms, we don’t believe in ‘one size fits all’ eye care. Unlike the big chains, we are a family-run, independent boutique that treats every appointment as a unique experience. We were incredibly proud to be named Eyewear Retailer of the Year, a testament to our commitment to clinical excellence and our curated collection of artisan frames most of which you won’t find elsewhere in Southport. When you’re visiting our Manchester Road shop, you aren’t just a number on a chart; you’re getting expert styling advice and a level of personal service that only a local independent opticians can provide.
expertise
Can I get my glasses made on-site at your Southport shop?
Yes, you can! One of the things our customers love most is our on-site glazing lab. Having our own lab right here in the shop on Manchester Road means we have total control over the quality of your lenses. Whether you’ve chosen a pair of our bespoke designer frames or need a complex prescription filled, Billy and Lyn handle the craftsmanship personally. This often allows for a much faster turnaround time than shops that have to send their work away to a mass-production factory, ensuring your vision is perfect the moment you walk out the door.
styling consultation
Do you offer an eyewear styling consultation?
Absolutely! Finding the right frame can be overwhelming. We offer a relaxed, no-pressure styling consultation where we look at your face shape, personal style, and colouring to help you find a frame you’ll love wearing, not just one you ‘have’ to wear. Think of it as having a friend with a good eye for design help you shop. Feel free to pop into our Manchester Road boutique or give us a call on 01704 828 299 to book your personalized session.
eye tests
Do you provide eye tests and how often should I have one?
We certainly do! Alex is available for eye tests at our opticians on Manchester Road every Monday and Saturday. The general rule for most adults is a check-up every two years. However, if you have a specific eye condition, a family history of eye problems, or if you’ve noticed any changes in your vision, we may recommend coming in more frequently. It’s always better to be safe and proactive about your eye health. To book your appointment, give us a call on 01704 828 299.
designer frames
What makes the focal rooms frame selection different?
We avoid the mass-produced, branded frames you see everywhere else. Instead, we travel the world to source unique, high-quality pieces from independent designers. We focus on craftsmanship, durability, and bold design—mostly handmade by artisans using the finest acetates and metals. When you wear a frame from the focal rooms, you know you’re wearing something truly special.
our brands
Which independent designers do you stock at the focal rooms?
We take pride in curating a collection you won’t find on the average high street. Our shelves are home to world-renowned independent labels including the architectural mastery of Blake Kuwahara, the vibrant and bold l.a.Eyeworks, and the vintage-inspired “flat front” designs of Thierry Lasry. These are just a few of the artisans we work with. Every brand we carry is chosen for its unique story, superior materials, and its ability to help you stand out from the crowd.
Repairs and Adjustments
Do you do repairs or adjustments for glasses I bought elsewhere?
Yes, we do! We know how frustrating it is when a pair of glasses doesn’t fit quite right or a screw works loose. Even if you didn’t buy your frames from us, you are more than welcome to bring them in. We’re happy to help with minor repairs, ultrasonic cleaning, or professional adjustments to get your glasses back to their best. While we’re happy to help, please note that some repairs are done at the owner’s risk depending on the frame’s condition.
Digital eye strain
What is ‘digital eye strain’ and how can you help?
If you spend long hours in front of screens, you might experience headaches, dry eyes, or blurred vision. This is often called digital eye strain. At the focal rooms, we specialise in helping you find relief. We can talk you through the best lens coatings and habits—like the 20-20-20 rule—to help reduce strain and keep your eyes feeling fresh. If you’re feeling the fatigue, pop into our boutique on Manchester Road, Southport, or call us on 01704 828 299 to discuss how we can protect your vision in the digital age.
Eye tests and the health of your body
Is the eye test just about checking if I need glasses?
Not at all. At the focal rooms, we view a comprehensive eye exam as a vital health check. While we certainly ensure your prescription is perfect, we also examine the health of your eyes. This allows us to look for early signs of conditions like glaucoma and cataracts, as well as broader health issues like high blood pressure or diabetes. Your eyes truly are a window to your overall wellbeing, and we take the responsibility of protecting your vision very seriously here in our Southport clinic.

The frames we offer are handmade by some of the best designers around the world who believe we are all individuals and that our eyewear should be celebrated. Most of our frames are limited editions, all are unique, and some are even bespoke – because you are the designer!
